The Harlem Health Promotion Center (HHPC) was founded in 1991 to serve as a bridge connecting those government agencies, academic institutions, and community organizations concerned with improving the health of Harlem's citizens.

The HHPC, one of the 33 Prevention Research Centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is under the administration of the Department of Sociomedical Sciences, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. It maintains strong links to Harlem Hospital, New York Presbyterian Hospital and other academic and community medical centers; the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; the New York State Department of Health; and an expanding network of community partners.
